What is the function of the kidneys?
The kidneys are located on both sides of the body below the membrane near the lower back. What are the causes of kidney infection?
Urine, similar to other fluids in the body is usually sterile without significant bacterial infection. Therefore, the presence of bacteria in urine is considered abnormal and may lead to urinary tract infections. Typically, to gain access to the urinary tract bacteria from the outside through the urethra (the tube for drainage of urine from the bladder). The bacteria may then ascend into the urinary tract and kidney infections cause. Nephritis (upper UTI) is usually more severe than lower urinary tract infection, because bacteria infect the bloodstream (bacteremia) from the kidneys.
Bacteria can travel from the rectum or vagina in the direction of the urethra in order to gain entry into the urinary tract. Other bacteria can proceed from the skin. Women are more prone to urinary tract infections due to the shorter duration of the urethra.

What are risk factors for kidney and urinary tract infections?
There are many factors that can increase the chances of an infection of the kidneys and urinary tract.
Intercourse (in women) can (called a condition sometimes referred to as “honeymoon cystitis“), the risk of urinary tract infections because of the possible introduction of bacteria to the urethra into the urinary tract.
Pregnancy can also cause an increased incidence of urinary tract infections and kidney infections in women, in fact, 2% to 8% of pregnant women may have infections of the urinary tract during pregnancy. This may be due to the slower transit of urine into the ureter in pregnancy from the pressure that occur the uterus used.
Urinary catheters (Foley catheters) also increase the risk of developing urinary tract and kidneys. The catheters are used in settings when urinate an individual may not be in a position due to the paralysis, serious illness, bed bound state, urinary incontinence (inability to keep the urine) or bladder problems. Urinary catheters simply a physical vehicle for the bacteria from the outside to be transported directly into the bladder and urinary tract.
Kidney stones and other structural abnormalities of the urinary tract can also lead to kidney infection. Impaired drainage and blockage of urine can lead to bacteria in the kidneys, without rising again washed with the urine. Any obstruction to the flow of urine can serve as a focus of infection that can spread to other parts of the urinary tract.
